About Blues Dancing

What is Blues dancing? Well, the simplest answer is that it's dancing to Blues music!

Blues has roots in African-American dancing from the early twentieth century, and as such it is very grounded while still maintaining a sense of power and energy. It is primarily a partnered dance, and it focuses on good connection and musical chioces over fancy steps or patterns.

Blues dancing is often considered easy to learn but difficult to master. The basic step is simply following the rhythm of the song with your body, usually by just stepping on the beat and expressing the pulse in the song. However, there are essentially no patterns in Blues, unlike what you see in most social partner dances. This means that there's a strong emphasis on creativity and communication while trying to style using the Blues aesthetic. The best dancers develop their own personal style and bring the music to life!

This dance style has exploded across the U.S. and across the world, with Blues scenes from L.A. to London, Boston to Berlin, Montreal to Melbourne, and many more. Odds are there's Blues dancing in your state, province, country, or backyard!
